Tanner stages 1-2 typically begin in girls 8-13 and boys 9-14. Talk early and often about body changes; questions are easier when started before puberty arrives. Adrenarche (body odor, axillary hair) often precedes true puberty. Most pediatric variation is normal — refer if breast development before 8 in girls, testicular enlargement before 9 in boys, or any signs of precocious puberty.
